Darcy Lever was born around 1760 and as a young man he went out to India where he acquired his nautical skills. On his return to England he settled first of all in Leeds and later at Pontefract. He died at Edinburgh in 1837. His book was very successful and for almost 40 years remained the text book on the subject within both the Royal Navy and in the merchant service. It remains one of the principal sources of information on the subject today. Illustrated with over 600 drawings and diagrams engraved onto 113 plates, the book explains in clear and easy terms every aspect of the art of seamanship, rigging and ship-handling from the days of wooden ships and sail. The book is invaluable to the ship model-maker but it is also of prime importance for the study of masts, spars, rigging, blocks, ropes, knotting, braces, sails, shrouds, ....
